Study in the UAE in 2026: universities, tuition, student visa, work rules and post-study visas

The UAE is a popular and close option for Indian students, with international branch campuses in Dubai and several nationally ranked universities. Rules are university-driven: your institution normally sponsors your visa. Official fee and funds pages were hard to reach, so some figures come from agents or aggregators and are flagged.
Universities
QS World University Rankings 2026: Khalifa University 177 and United Arab Emirates University 229 (up 32 places). University of Sharjah is reported at 328 in an earlier edition. In QS 2027, a Khaleej Times report puts Khalifa at 147, UAEU 217, American University of Sharjah 258, Sharjah 283, Abu Dhabi University 348 and American University in Dubai 620. UAEU says 12 UAE universities were ranked in 2026.
Tuition and costs
A third-party education site gives indicative tuition of AED 30,000 to 90,000 a year for undergraduates and 45,000 to 120,000 for postgraduates, with first-year upfront cash of AED 7,000 to 10,000 and health insurance of AED 1,200 to 3,200 a semester. We could not find a reliable monthly living-cost figure in AED.
Student visa
According to the Consulate General of India in Dubai:
- The university sponsors the student residence permit, valid for up to 12 months and renewed annually. Families in India generally cannot sponsor, so the university does.
- A medical test and Emirates ID are required for students 18 and over.
- An overstay fine of AED 25 a day is mentioned.
- An agent site gives fees such as AED 365 for an entry permit from outside the UAE and AED 1,035 from inside, and a total setup of AED 3,000 to 6,000. These are third-party figures.
- There is no official minimum funds figure, and the university sets what evidence it wants. An aggregator suggests AED 30,000 as a recommendation.
Working while you study
A student visa alone does not allow work. Part-time work needs written permission from your university and a work permit from the labour ministry, typically around 15 hours a week or 60 hours a month according to the consulate advisory, which also says to verify locally.
After graduation
There is no automatic post-study work visa. The consulate lists:
- Job Seeker visa of 60 to 120 days for graduates from a top-500 university within two years of graduating, with a financial guarantee.
- Green Visa of five years for people meeting an income test of AED 15,000 a month.
- Golden Visa of 10 years for outstanding graduates with a GPA of about 3.5 to 3.8.
Read our guide to the UAE golden visa changes before relying on any of these.
Intakes and entry requirements
September is the main intake, January or February is second, and there is a small summer intake. Most programmes are in English and want IELTS Academic 5.5 to 7.0 or a TOEFL equivalent. Many undergraduate programmes accept Indian Class 12 marks, and scholarship waivers of 85% or more are reported on a third-party site.
Branch campuses and checks
KHDA's ratings of Dubai institutions in 2019 included campuses of BITS Pilani, Manipal, Amity and S.P. Jain, as well as UK campuses such as Heriot-Watt, Manchester and Middlesex. These are 2019 results from a trade-press article, so check current ratings. The consulate advises verifying the institution's accreditation (the UAE Commission for Academic Accreditation, or the Dubai and Abu Dhabi education authorities), using only empanelled agents, and having documents attested. A third-party report says Indians made up about 43% of Dubai's private higher-education intake in 2024-25, but we could not read the underlying article.
Scholarships
Institutional merit waivers, Indian government schemes and bilateral programmes are mentioned. We could not verify any UAE government scholarship specifically for Indian students.
