🇨🇴 Colombia visa and immigration options

Colombia is one of 197 destinations covered by Visa Ray. We map 7 pathways across work visas, study visas, business and investor visas, family visas, permanent residence, citizenship and visitor visas. Amounts are quoted in the local currency (COP), USD or EUR where stated. Figures are reviewed periodically (our most volatile figures were last audited on 16 October 2026), but immigration rules change often, so always confirm with the official source before you apply.

Reasons to consider Colombia

Based on the pathways we map, here is what Colombia offers different kinds of applicants:

Visa and immigration options for Colombia

Work visas

M-5 Work Visa

For foreign employees with a signed contract from a Colombian employer. The sponsoring employer must demonstrate financial solvency — commonly cited as an average monthly bank balance of at least 100 SMMLV (Colombia's minimum-wage unit) over the past 6 months — alongside a Chamber of Commerce certificate, a justification for hiring a foreign national, and…

Processing time
Commonly 2-5 weeks for clean files at Cancillería; realistic end-to-end timing from hiring decision to issued visa is often 2-4 months.
Typical costs
Roughly USD 320-330 in direct visa fees, plus the cédula de extranjería fee after arrival.
Government fees
the 100 SMMLV employer-solvency figure is commonly cited but not independently confirmed against an official Cancillería decree by every source — confirm the current requirement with Cancillería or a qualified adviser.
Work and study rights
Tied to the sponsoring employer and role; valid up to 3 years, renewable.
Family
Family members can generally apply via their own family-based M visa (e.g. M-Cónyuge or M-beneficiary) once the primary applicant holds status.

Study visas

Student Visa (Visitor/Student category, programs over 6 months)

For foreign nationals enrolled in a Colombian educational program lasting more than 6 months and up to 1 year. Requires an enrollment letter from a recognized institution (naming the program, duration, hours and modality) and proof of funds for tuition and living costs, via a bank certificate or 6 months of bank/credit-card statements.

Processing time
Commonly 2-4 weeks for complete applications, or 4-8 weeks if additional documents are requested.
Typical costs
Likely in the range of other Colombian visa categories (roughly USD 250-330 in direct fees), though confirm the exact figure before applying given the inconsistency in published sources.
Government fees
published fee figures for this visa are inconsistent across sources (one widely-cited figure appears to confuse the visa fee with Colombia's minimum wage) — confirm the current fee directly with Cancillería before budgeting. Other Colombian M/V visas commonly…
Work and study rights
Student status does not automatically include open work authorization; check current rules for any limited allowances.
Family
Dependants are not routinely included on a student's own visa application; family members would generally need their own basis.

Business and investor visas

Investor Visa (M-10 real estate or M-6/M-Investor business)

Colombia offers two main investor routes: real estate (a home registered solely in the applicant's name, worth at least roughly 350 SMMLV) or a business/foreign-direct-investment route (registered investment above roughly 650 SMMLV). Both thresholds are set in SMMLV (Colombia's minimum-wage unit) and must be maintained for the life of the visa.

Processing time
Varies by case and investment complexity; confirm current estimates with Cancillería or a qualified adviser.
Typical costs
By far the largest cost driver among Colombia's residency routes — commonly USD 185,000+ for real estate or USD 345,000+ for a business investment, which must be maintained throughout the visa's validity.
Government fees
Colombia's 2026 minimum wage was set via a decree that was briefly suspended by a court and then reissued at the same figure (Decree 0159, 19 February 2026); the Council of State lifted its suspension in July 2026 without ruling on the merits, so this…
Work and study rights
Investor-visa holders can generally work or operate their business, subject to general immigration rules; the investment must be maintained for the life of the visa.
Family
Family members can generally apply via their own family-based M visa once the primary applicant holds status.

Important: the SMMLV-denominated thresholds are directly exposed to Colombia's minimum-wage decree, which has itself been subject to litigation in 2026 — don't rely on a single cached peso or USD figure. The real-estate investment must be registered solely in the applicant's own name.

Family visas

M-Cónyuge (Spouse/Permanent Partner of a Colombian National)

For the spouse or permanent partner of a Colombian national. No income threshold is published for this route, but applicants must document the genuineness of the relationship (marriage certificate or proof of a registered/documented permanent union) and their sponsor's Colombian nationality.

Processing time
Varies by case; involves document review and potentially an interview.
Typical costs
Likely comparable to Colombia's other M-visa categories (roughly USD 250-330 in direct fees), pending confirmation.
Government fees
Confirm current study and issuance fees directly with Cancillería; figures weren't consistently published across sources at time of writing.
Work and study rights
M-Cónyuge holders can generally work once their visa is issued.
Family
This program is itself the family route — the marital/partnership relationship to the Colombian sponsor is the basis for eligibility. Time on this visa counts toward the R visa after 3 years (the spouse-specific accumulation period).

Permanent residence

Resident Visa (Visa R)

Colombia's long-term settlement status, reached after accumulating time on M-category visas — IMPORTANT: only time on M visas counts; time on V visas (including the digital nomad and rentista visas) does not count toward the R visa. The required period ranges from 2 years (parents of Colombian-national children, and Mercosur/Andean-community M visas) to 5…

Processing time
Varies by case; applicants typically apply once their qualifying M-visa period is complete.
Typical costs
Government fees are modest relative to the multi-year M-visa accumulation period itself.
Government fees
Confirm current R-visa application fees with Cancillería; as of 20 September 2026 all applications route through Cancillería's online portal, which may affect published fee schedules.
Work and study rights
R visa holders can work for any employer without a separate work authorization and face no renewal requirement (the R visa itself does not expire, though the underlying ID card does).
Family
Family members can generally apply for their own status via family-based M or R routes.

Important: a court suspended Colombia's original December 2025 minimum-wage decree; the government reissued the same figure via Decree 0159 (19 February 2026), and the Council of State lifted its suspension on 17 July 2026 without yet ruling on the merits — so SMMLV-denominated thresholds elsewhere in Colombia's immigration system could still change. Time on V visas…

Citizenship

Colombian citizenship by naturalization

Governed by Ley 2332 de 2023 (effective 25 September 2023), which replaced the older 1993 law. Applicants must first hold a Resident (R) visa; residency time counts only from the date that visa was issued, and an absence of a year or more interrupts the accumulated time.

Processing time
Varies by case; naturalization is a discretionary decision by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so meeting the formal requirements makes you eligible but doesn't guarantee approval.
Typical costs
Modest government fees relative to the residency requirement itself; confirm current amounts with Cancillería.
Government fees
Confirm current naturalization application fees with Cancillería; figures weren't consistently published across sources at time of writing.
Work and study rights
Citizenship adds a Colombian passport and removes all remaining immigration-status conditions.
Family
Each adult applies individually based on their own residency history and relationship category.

Important: this requires first holding an R visa — time on M visas before converting to R, or on V visas, does not itself count toward the naturalization clock, only time held on the R visa does. A Spanish-proficiency exam is required for non-native Spanish speakers, plus a knowledge exam on the Colombian Constitution, history, geography and culture (some exemptions…

Visitor visas

Visit Colombia (visa-exempt entry or tourist visa)

Most nationalities can enter Colombia visa-free for up to 90 days. Holders of a valid US or Schengen visa or residence permit (valid for at least 180 days from arrival), or a US Green Card, from otherwise visa-required countries can also enter visa-free for up to 90 days.

Processing time
Immediate for visa-exempt entry (plus the Check-Mig form); visa applications for non-exempt nationalities vary.
Typical costs
Free for most visa-exempt nationalities (Canadians pay a modest arrival fee); visa fees for non-exempt nationalities vary.
Government fees
whether you're visa-exempt, qualify via a third-country visa/residence permit, or need a Colombian visa in advance depends entirely on your nationality — always check your specific passport's requirement before booking travel.
Work and study rights
Does not permit employment or long-term study.
Family
Each traveller, including children, needs their own Check-Mig submission and entry authorization.

Important: Check-Mig (an online immigration form) must be completed before every entry to and exit from Colombia, regardless of nationality or visa-exempt status — this is a relatively recent requirement and is separate from any visa itself.
