Nursing abroad in 2026: licensing, exams, visas and costs for Indian nurses in the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany and more
Last reviewed 2026-10-25. Rules, fees and processing times in this area change often. Check the official source before you act, and tell us if something looks out of date.
Nursing is one of the most in-demand professions in immigration systems, but registration comes before the visa in almost every country. You need a licence from the local regulator, then a job offer or immigration route. This guide summarises the main destinations for Indian-trained nurses and flags where our sources were thin.
The general pattern
- Credential check with the regulator or an assessment body.
- English test (usually IELTS Academic or OET).
- Competence exam if your training is judged different (NCLEX, CBT/OSCE or a country-specific test).
- Registration, then a job offer and work visa, or an immigration points route.
- Settlement options, which vary and are changing in several countries.
Costs and timelines are long. Treat any agent who promises a fixed timeline or a guaranteed job as a warning sign (see the scams section).
United Kingdom
- Regulator: the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Steps: an evaluation of your qualification (fee GBP 167), the Test of Competence (a computer-based test, then a practical OSCE), proof of English, then registration (GBP 182).
- OSCE: 10 stations at an approved provider, with up to three attempts per application. The NMC cost page totals about GBP 1,226 if you pass every stage first time. It also says fees rose on 1 October 2026, and we did not read the new amounts, so check them.
- English: one guide summarising NMC rules gives IELTS Academic 7 in reading, listening and speaking and 6.5 in writing, or OET B (C+ in writing).
- Visa: the Health and Care Worker visa needs a job with a licensed sponsor and a certificate of sponsorship. From 8 April 2026 the fee is GBP 324 for up to three years and GBP 628 for longer; the health surcharge does not apply to this visa. Decisions usually take about three weeks.
- Rule changes: care-worker roles closed to new overseas recruitment on 22 July 2025. Registered nurses are higher-skilled jobs, and we found no source saying the nurse route closed, but check the current rules.
- Settlement: the gov.uk page still shows five years, but the UK has consulted on a longer "earned settlement" baseline, and we could not verify the outcome. Read our explainer on UK earned settlement before planning around five years.
Canada
- Process: apply to NNAS for the advisory report (the entry point for all provinces except Quebec and the territories), then to the provincial regulator (for example CNO in Ontario), which may direct you to take the NCLEX-RN, bridging education or other assessment.
- NCLEX-RN: registration CAD 360 plus an international scheduling fee of CAD 150 for those testing outside Canada (April 2026 bulletin). The authorisation to test is typically valid for about 90 days, so schedule carefully.
- Express Entry: there is a Healthcare and Social Services category. Draws on 22 July 2025 and 20 February 2026 each invited 4,000 candidates (the February cut-off was 467). Registered nurses fall under NOC 31301. Sources disagree on whether the minimum experience is 6 or 12 months, with the newer ones saying 12, so confirm on canada.ca.
- NNAS fees and the "months to licence" figures we found came from a commercial blog, so we do not quote them.
Australia
- Regulator: the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), through AHPRA.
- Model: a free self-check sorts you into three streams. Stream B uses an Outcomes Based Assessment: the NCLEX-RN, then an OSCE in Adelaide. Fees reported in 2019 to 2024 include AUD 640 for assessment and AUD 4,000 for the OSCE, which may have changed.
- Fast track: from March 2025, nurses from certain comparable countries with enough recent practice skip further exams. We could not confirm India is on that list, and it was not mentioned in the article we read, so assume it is not.
- Visas: options include employer-sponsored and skilled-migration visas, and occupation lists change. Check Home Affairs.
Ireland
- Regulator: NMBI. Recognition and registration are reported to take about 18 months on average, including any compensation measure (supervised practice or an aptitude test).
- English: IELTS Academic 7 overall with 7 in listening, reading and speaking and 6.5 in writing, or OET B (C+ in writing), in a single sitting.
- Permit: a Critical Skills Employment Permit needs a job offer of at least two years and an NMBI-accepted qualification. Salary thresholds rose on 1 March 2026 and the nurse-specific 2026 figure was not confirmed. The permit fee is EUR 1,000, with 90% refunded if refused.
Germany
- Recognition (Anerkennung) of your qualification takes about three to four months, with outcomes of full, partial or no recognition; partial recognition may require an adaptation course or a knowledge exam.
- Language: B2 German for the licence to practise.
- Visa: a qualified-employment residence permit after recognition. The EU Blue Card does not apply to nursing.
- Triple Win is a government programme that has placed nurses from some Indian states. Recruitment from some countries is restricted to government channels.
New Zealand
- Document verification through TruMerit, an application to the Nursing Council, and a competence assessment (online exam, orientation and an OSCE in Christchurch) if directed. Reported fees include NZD 485 for the application and NZD 3,000 for the OSCE.
- Registered nurses were on the Green List's work-to-residence tier in a 2022 document. Check the current status.
- The Indian government has warned about agents sending nurses on visitor visas to take the programme with no job.
United States
- Credential evaluation through TruMerit (formerly CGFNS), English tests if needed, a state board application and the NCLEX-RN (USD 200 plus a USD 150 international scheduling fee).
- Registered nurses are on Schedule A, which means no labour certification, but immigrant visa waits are long. In the October 2026 Visa Bulletin the EB-3 India final action date stayed at 1 January 2014, which implies a wait of well over a decade.
Gulf countries
Regulators include the DHA in Dubai, the DOH in Abu Dhabi and MOHAP for the northern emirates. Source verification through DataFlow is mandatory. One agency reports 6 to 10 weeks for Dubai and 3 to 5 months for Abu Dhabi, but we could not confirm that independently.
Avoiding recruitment scams
- Use only recruiting agents registered with the Ministry of External Affairs, and check the licence number on the emigration portal.
- Under the Emigration Act, the agent service charge is capped at Rs 30,000 plus GST with a receipt. Demands of lakhs are a red flag.
- A valid offer is a contract signed by the foreign employer, the agent and you, on a work visa, not a tourist visa.
- Be careful with agents who only use WhatsApp or Facebook.
- Registration and exams cannot be sold as job guarantees.

Studying nursing abroad instead
A foreign nursing degree does not give you a Canadian or UK licence by itself, and graduates of Canadian programmes still sit the NCLEX-RN. In Canada, master's and doctoral students at public institutions are exempt from the study permit cap's provincial attestation from 1 January 2026, and the UK Graduate route shortens to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. Always check that the course is approved by the regulator.

Figures were gathered in October 2026 from regulator, university, government, law-firm and education-site pages. Many official pages could not be read directly, some fees are dated and several figures come from a single secondary source. We flag these where they matter. Fees, exam rules and visa conditions change often, so confirm everything with the regulator, school or immigration authority before you pay or apply.
