Top universities in the UK for international students: rankings, courses, fees and how to apply (2026)

The UK has four universities in the QS 2027 top ten, and a degree here can be completed in three years for most undergraduate courses and one year for most master's degrees. That shorter length is a big saving for many international students.

Top UK universities in QS 2027

QS 2027 rank University Known for
=2 Imperial College London Engineering, science, medicine, business
4 University of Oxford Humanities, law, medicine, PPE, sciences
6 University of Cambridge Mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, medicine
=8 University College London (UCL) Architecture, law, medicine, data science, social sciences

QS reported that five UK universities reached record ranks in 2027, although many UK institutions fell in the same table. Other well-regarded UK universities such as Edinburgh, Manchester and King's College London are also popular with international students. Check their current QS positions on the QS website.

Courses and structure

UK undergraduate degrees are subject-specific from day one: you apply for a single course such as Economics, Mechanical Engineering or Law. Typical lengths are three years (four in Scotland, and four for many integrated master's degrees). One-year taught master's degrees are common, which keeps total fees and living costs lower than a two-year programme elsewhere.

Fees for international students

International fees depend on the subject.

Living costs and the visa funds rule

For a UK Student visa you must show maintenance funds held for 28 days. The current figures are about GBP 1,529 a month in London and GBP 1,171 a month elsewhere (up to nine months). For applications made on or after 30 November 2026, those rise to about GBP 1,570 and GBP 1,203. The rate depends on your application date, and outstanding tuition fees are added.

How to apply (undergraduate)

  1. Choose up to five courses on UCAS.
  2. Write one personal statement for all five choices.
  3. Meet the deadlines. Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses have an earlier deadline in mid-October; the main deadline for other courses is in January.
  4. Provide academic references and predicted grades. Many universities set conditional offers based on national exams such as A-levels, the IB, or equivalents.
  5. Prove English ability with IELTS, TOEFL or similar, or, in some cases, a recognised qualification.
  6. Take admissions tests and interviews where required (Oxford, Cambridge and some UCL and Imperial courses use them).

How to apply (postgraduate)

Taught master's applications go directly to the university, usually with a degree transcript, a personal statement, references and English proof. Popular courses fill early, so apply well before the final deadline.

The Student visa

Once you accept an offer and meet any conditions, the university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). You then apply online, pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, show your funds, and submit biometrics. Check GOV.UK for current fees and any new levies on international students.
