🇲🇾 Malaysia visa and immigration options
Malaysia is one of 197 destinations covered by Visa Ray. We map 7 pathways across work visas, study visas, business and investor visas, family visas, permanent residence, citizenship and visitor visas. Amounts are quoted in the local currency (MYR), USD or EUR where stated. Figures are reviewed periodically (our most volatile figures were last audited on 16 October 2026), but immigration rules change often, so always confirm with the official source before you apply.
Reasons to consider Malaysia
Based on the pathways we map, here is what Malaysia offers different kinds of applicants:
- Work visa: Standard route for skilled foreign employees of a Malaysian-registered company, tiered into three salary-based categories that determine validity, benefits, and renewal conditions.
- Study visa: Visa for students admitted to a Malaysian educational institution registered with the Ministry of Higher Education.
- Business and investor visa: Visa for exploring business opportunities or short-term professional engagements; a durable business presence requires company registration with the SSM and a linked Employment Pass.
- Family visa: Visa for the foreign spouse of a Malaysian citizen or Permanent Resident, renewable and potentially leading to Permanent Resident status after a qualifying period of marriage.
- Permanent residence: A multi-tier long-stay programme (Silver, Gold, Platinum, and a lower-cost Special Economic Zone tier) requiring a fixed deposit and qualifying home purchase, with validity from 5 to 20 years depending on tier.
- Citizenship: Naturalization requiring at least 10 of the 12 years before applying as a resident (with the final 12 months continuous), functional Bahasa Malaysia ability, and full discretionary approval by the government.

Permanent residence
Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H)
A multi-tier long-stay programme (Silver, Gold, Platinum, and a lower-cost Special Economic Zone tier) requiring a fixed deposit and qualifying home purchase, with validity from 5 to 20 years depending on tier.
- Processing time
- Several months via a MOTAC-approved agent.
