Visas for software and tech workers in 2026: which routes need a job offer and how fast each leads to PR

Last reviewed 2026-10-27. Rules, fees and processing times in this area change often. Check the official source before you act, and tell us if something looks out of date.

Tech workers have more routes than almost any other profession, but the best one depends on two questions: do you need a job offer first, and how fast does it lead to permanent residence? Thresholds below come mostly from law-firm and adviser pages, because official pages were hard to reach, so treat them as a shortlist and confirm on the official site. Country-level detail is in our posts on the Blue Card, Netherlands, Singapore and the salary roundup.

Routes that do not need a job offer first

Germany's reduced Blue Card line for IT specialists also covers people without a degree, with at least three years of recent IT experience (two sources agree on the three years).

What changed in 2026

How to choose

  1. Want PR quickly: Germany with B1, or the Netherlands, are the fastest employer-based routes in this list on current reports.
  2. No offer yet: Global Talent (UK), the Opportunity Card (Germany) or the UAE Golden Visa let you move without an employer, but each has its own evidence or funds test.
  3. Strong profile for points systems: see points-based systems explained.
  4. Remote work from abroad: see digital nomad visas vs a tourist visa.

Figures were gathered in October 2026. Official government pages were often unreachable, so many figures come from law-firm, adviser and news pages; each is marked where it rests on one source, and anything we could not confirm is labelled. Rules, fees and thresholds change often, so confirm everything with the official body before you apply or pay.
